NM locomotive question

Anyone know what this locomotive (or part of one) might be that was recently found on the old SP Cloudcroft Branch in New Mexico?

Information on this locomotive can be found in the Forest Service Publication Logging Railroads of the Lincoln National forest, New Mexico. by Vernon J. Glover and avaliable from the Friends of the C&TS. They blew up a few in the Sacramento Mountains. A railroad where 30 degree curves and 6% rulling grades dominated the standard guage line between Cloucroft and Alamogordo. An interesting line.

I only read the newspaper article about the desire of the guy who discovered the locomotive to dig it up.

The limited information raises several questions:

1) Why was the locomoitve not scrapped?

2) How did it get buried?

3) If it was intentionally buried, why did they do so?

4) Is the locomotive located near the railroad route on which it operated?

5) If so, is it presumed that the engine currently resides where it ended up after the boiler explosion?

6) If not, now far is the engine from the place where it exploded?

7) Also, if the engine is not where it exploded, why was it moved to a different location for disposal?
