SP&S #539 moving from Battle Ground, WA

Well, yesterday went extrealmy well. She crossed the road at 12PM with almost no problems. My photos have been posted. Follow the link. Now the real work on the 539 can begin.

If all goes to plan, she will hopefully be running by the end of the year.

If you hope to have the 539 running by the end of the year I assume you are well past the teardown phase and have done the form 4 work. It also goes without saying that the locomotive is in reasonably good condition. Can you give us a short review of the jobs you still must complete and an idea of how many people you have working on the project?

John,

Thanks for your intrest in the 539's progress, but to answer your question the majority of the work to do is replace a couple hundred flexable staybolts caps and sleaves, finish disassebling the running gear clean repair as needed and reassemble, instal the new 2.25" tubes hydro, lag paint, fire up.

Interesting locomotive. That's the only U.S. locomotive I've seen that still has extended piston rods. These were common in Europe, but seem to have been used for only a short time here.

I assume you have not yet done the ultrasound on the boiler yet.Also,what are the plans for operating the 539?

Brian,

You mention the 2.25 inch tubes. Does that mean the superheater flues are already installed? It also sounds like the superheaters are ready to go back in. Is that the case?

I am just curious and am rapidly getting more interested in this restoration. Thanks again for any information you can provide.

All ultrasound work of areas of concern has taken place has been performed, and the grid pattern ultrasound for the formal form 4 calculations will take place over the next couple of weeks.

I intend to leave the super-heater flues in the locomotive the hav passed our non distructive testing, we have not yet hydro tested the super-heater elements but they look good I don't think we will have any real problems with them but if we do we will deal with it.

or NP 1762.
