Erik- I believe the road number on this S-1 when in service on the Erie Railroad was # 307. Les |

Thanks Scot! Our museum has sister engine Erie #310 (currently painted up as Erie-Lackawanna #310). Built 1-1947 Builder #75121 I believe another ex-Erie S-1 is displayed someplace out west (Kansas perhaps?) Les Beckman Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum (North Judson, Indiana) |

Interesting as well, Cross Harbors recently cut up two scrapped out ALCO S units and a junk SW1. The preserved unit, I believe still has it's Prime Mover inside, and a viable one at that. Of course we are delighted to see another ALCO preserved, but I wonder if the purpose could have been filled by one of the junkers, saving this locomotive for operational use somewhere. Also The purist in me comes to the surface), why paint her up as NYC, when Erie did float work as well? Okay, I'll stop carping and instead, pat them on the back for the donation, adding a big thank you to the Cross Harbor folks. Now, how do you keep the "taggers" and glass breakers away? |

At least as of April 2005, there was indeed another ex-Erie S-1 displayed in Kansas. #315 is on display at a pizza restaurant in Galena, KS (in the extreme SE corner of the state, near Joplin MO). The engine is still wearing a very weathered Erie livery, the cab totally vandalized, the hood completely empty and no traction motors. When I visited in April 2005, the owner indicated that their Insurance company had recently criticized the engine as a liability risk and suggested they get rid of it. The owner was considering offering it to a local historical Society, who already have a Whitcomb 44-ton Centercab, BN caboose and MKT depot on display. I haven't been through Galena since, so don't have any more current information than that. Dan Rohrback |
