Post subject:  For Tom Shreve: Heisler Rod *PIC*
Tom:
Your post a few days ago mentioning the Heisler piston rod for Roaring Camp prompted me to take a look in the old "archives". According to my notes, I made it in June of 1990.

Here's a photo of the new rod and piston ready for installation of the rings. There's a 12 inch rule next to it for scale.

Glad to hear you haven't had any trouble with it since. It kind of made a mess when the original rod "came apart".

It sure did, Rob. If I remember right, the cylinder cover flew 30 feet in the air and hit a bird in flight. We had the other rod replaced last year, again with 4140 steel. Magnaflux testing found cracking in the cross head yoke in the same area where the other one failed. I'll pass on the picture to the crew. Thanks

BTW, was the Xhead yoke forged integral to the rod, welded on, or how?

Dave, the whole rod with cross head was machined out of one piece of solid stock.

The Heisler recovered, but that bird never was the same.

And five wheelbarrows full of chips. What a job that must have been.......but can't question the results. Thanks.
