Post subject: O/T Something unusual about the Interchange and Classifieds
PostPosted: Wed Aug 30, 2006 7:34 pm

Hi All,
I have found that if I log on to the Interchange then go over to the Classifieds I have to log on again. It happens the same way going from the Classifieds to the Interchange.
Was this done on purpose or just one of those things that just got missed?

I've notice the same thing ever since classifieds opened...I just live with it, by visiting classified less frequently. I just have to make sure that I have looked over everything on interchange that is new before I go to classifieds--because when I come back and log on to interchange -- nothing new will have been posted while I was "gone".

Gentlemen,

There is a simple solution. The next time you log in, check the "Log me in automatically on each visit" box.

I've tried that, and logging onto the other forum blows it away. Dueling cookies, I think.

That automatic login feature has never worked for me, even without visiting the classifieds. My browser does have cookies enabled and it works on other forums, just not here for some reason.

Hi Kevin,
I too have tried setting it up that way and it never has worked for me either. I have actually tried it on 3 different systems and still no go.

Here's what happens, at least in the case of Interchange and Classifieds. There are two (2) instances of phpBB running under the same URL (rypn.sunserver.com, in this case).

When you log in to interchange, after selecting Auto Login, a toal of three cookies are created: two which contain information about what you're doing as you move through the interchange and which expire and vanish from your machine when your "session" ends. The third is the autologin information, encrypted against an MD5 hash generated by the instance of phpBB you're logging into. The same autologin information CANNOT be used by two different instances of phpBB

When you switch to Classifieds, the two session related cookies that were created when you logged in to Interchange are instantly deleted from your browser and new ones UNDER THE SAME NAME are created for classifieds.

Now...if you log in to classifieds, the AutoLogin cookie is updated and no longer pertains to Interchange. Thus, as you switch back and forth phpBB will continue to do this. The only solution would be to provide Hume with another URL for the Classifieds, which I will happily do if he requests it.

I have the same problem whenever I'm browsing interchange. I log in; I don't get a message saying I've used the wrong password or anything like that, but my name isn't displayed under who is on line, and I still get the messages at the bottom that I CANNOT post, etc. I can log on to post something, but as soon as I've posted something, I need to log on again.

Would the use of sub-domains fix this problem? (For example: interchange.rypn.org and classifieds.rypn.org)

Yup...they probably will. And when Hume gets back (around the 20th) we'll address this issue.
