Not sure if this is already posted here yet, but a proper C&S beartrap spark arrestor has been re-applied to C&S No. 9 at Georgetown. This was fabricated some years ago for application to C&S 74 in Boulder, and was also applied briefly to D&RGW 346 at Golden, which had one for a time when leased to the South Park line. Both the latter two engines are undergoing slow restoration to operation. No. 9 presently burns oil, using the 74's tender.

Please don't take offense at this Bob, but I just can't sit this one out. Of course, I should keep quiet, but here goes anyway.

The PROPER C&S NAME for the gizmo you mention is "spark arrestor" or else "Ridgeway spark arrestor". "Bear trap" is a railfan word, NOT a C&S word. When I worked for BN/C&S, the last working engineman from the Clear Creek Division, Clyde Clark, the last engineer to run steam on the Leadville branch, Danny Krawckik, and the last man hired at Como, Frank Strohmeyer were all still working in Denver Terminal. Whenever I met up with any of these fellas anywhere near a coffee pot, I would try to get them talking about the C&S narrow gauge, and often succeeded. In thirteen years I never heard any of these guys mention a "bear trap stack" or spark arrestor, and when I asked them about this phrase, they said it was news to them. That's good enough for me. Now, how many guys that never worked for the C&S are going to "correct" me because some book or magazine says "bear trap" ???
