Guys, I think you are right about that bell being an inverted flower pot. By the way, did anyone notice that the valve gear seems to be missing? |

It's not missing. It has Stephenson valve gear instead of the more common Walschaert valve gear. Stephenson valve gear is mounted between the wheels. |

While the engine has stephenson valve gear I think Mr. Gray is refering to the missing valve rod and apparently the the linkage connecting it to the links. This can be seen in the view of the left front of the engine. The bell cradle is an odd arrangement. John Bohon |

Thank you John. As a proud member of the Civil War Railroads Historical Society, as well as a modeler of 1860's railroading, I am well versed in the eccentricities (pun intended) of the Stephenson valve gear. Anyone up for a philosophical discussion of the Baldwin-Cuyahoga variable cutoff gear?.......... :) |

The bell is made of some sort of wood or plastic I believe. The number plate below the headlight is carved from wood by a friend of Mr. Bangay who owns the museum. They did a nice job. If you check out the website they show how the engine was delivered in pieces and some people said they'd never get it back together again! Looks to me like they did an amazing job. |
