The CMRR's yard engine in Kingston, No. 401 is currently being repainted from Green Mountain colors to NYC "Lightning Stripe" livery more appropriate for the Catskill Mountain Branch of the New York Central.

The CMRR wants the 401 to look good for track work in Kingston this fall. They want to get the 401 out to Kingston Plaza, about a mile west of the shops. It should make for some nice photos. I'll post some "in-progress" photos on NERAIL next time I get a chance to visit the Kingston shops.

FYI, the 401 is ex Green Mountain 401, GM&O 1055, Illinois Terminal 1056, 756. Built 03/10/1950 B/N 77070. Acquired 1987.

Question. Did the New York Central have any RS-1's, and if so, what were they numbered?

Thanks.

I believe the NYC owned 14, numbered 8100 to 8113.

Although the unit will be painted in "Lightning Stripe" livery, I believe it will still be lettered for the CMRR. Probably they will keep the 401 number.

When new, the NYC RS-1s were used to displace steam power on the U&D and Walkill Valley lines out of Kingston (about 1948), so while this is not a strict restoration, it is a reasonable replication (in my opinion).

Not the same unit, but here's what they looked like toward the end on the GM&O:
