Where can I find tapered bolts for the smokebox to saddle.

Dear Adam:
Tapered bolts are sometimes refered to as "fitted" bolts or "driven" bolts. Each bolts must be individually fit to the tapered hole it is meant for, typically leaving a space of 1/2" to 3/4" (depending on size) between the bottom of the head of the bolt and the part that it is to join when the bolt is placed in the hole. Then the bolt is driven the rest of the way into the hole with a sledge hammer. A lot of care must be taken in fitting the bolts properly so they drive in tight, but not so tight that they can't be driven in all the way.
At the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works the fitted bolt shop was adjacent to the end of the erecting hall and guys would be running back and forth continously between the locomotives and the bolt shop. The frame gang would try the bolts and if they found any that were too large, they were sent back and the girls that ran the lathes would turn them down a bit or make another one. It took time, but once the bolts are driven in, they are there for keeps.
