We encourage all concerned to make time to attend the meeting as time and circumstance allow. Though we are aware that many of you are excited to see the outcome of our study, we are unable to make any comments regarding any aspect of the written report at this time. Following is a Press Release written and prepared by EDD Region 9 of Southwest Colorado. See our web page at www.wasatch-rr-contractors for further information regarding the study. ___________________________ October 6, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: John E. Rimmasch Chief Executive Officer, Wasatch Railroad Contractors Julie Levy Community Development Coordinator, Region 9 EDD On Thursday, October 19th the Train Smoke Mitigation Task Force will hold a public meeting in the Fort Lewis College Student Memorial Lounge to present the results of the recent feasibility study. John E. Rimmasch, CEO of Wasatch Railroad Contractors, will present the findings and recommendations of the feasibility study to the public at 6:30pm. Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission will be attending the presentation and participating in discussion. Time will be scheduled for public questions and comment at the conclusion of the presentation. The feasibility study examined options for expanding the D&SNGRR’s existing smoke stack scrubber system, the feasibility to build a new separate, external smoke stack scrubber system, and the alternative technologies which may be used by the new external system. The study also included the feasibility of using alternative fuels such as wood pellets and natural gas overnight, during startup, and heating water prior to use in locomotive boilers. In August of 2006 Wasatch Railroad Contractors, a Cheyenne based locomotive restoration corporation embarked on a detailed study to determine the causes of poor air quality in the Durango area. The focus of the study encompassed the use and handling of historic steam locomotives currently in use on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The community and the railroad joined forces last year in creating the Train Smoke Mitigation Task Force. The Task Force sought outside, engineering opinions regarding the best possible solutions to the problem. Wasatch Railroad Contractors has reviewed all possible solutions presented by the Task Force and has explored additional solutions and options to aid in mitigating the problem. The Task Force and Wasatch Railroad Contractors welcome public comment regarding train smoke reduction. To final report and presentation are open to the public. The presentation will be held at the Fort Lewis Collage, Student Memorial Lounge, located in the Collage Union Building on Thursday October 19th at 6:30.
