After years of rusting in very bad shape at Mason City, Iowa, it looks better after volunteer work. Not a complete cosmetic restoration, but certainly an improvement:

Looks pretty complete to me.
Those people in Mason City deserve a big "Bravo" for the job they did under tough circumstances. Most of them knew little or nothing about steam engines, but they rounded up folks you could weld, screw pipe together, swing a paint brush or sprayer and all the other skills that they needed.
They wound up having pretty much the whole city of Mason City behind them, including the city fathers.
In my opinion, they did a fantastic job.

How many park locomotives could benefit from such a local commitment? Lovely job. Now get it under a weather shed with lights and fence it off.
Very, very, nice work by all concerned.

The roof is almost under way. The group has raised almost the entire amout required.. The Parks Dept. has done some grading and put up an ornamental fence. They have people on the scene on week ends and have had a great turnout.
Shows what can be done.

There was a time when I would have cited this engine as an example of a park engine that made the Roanoke scrapyard engines look pretty good. These guys have done a tremendous job, and a "before-and-after" snapshot of this engine should definitely serve as an inspiration to any city or preservation group considering such a project for their local park engine.
