That is "Mataro" #1; a replica of an 1848 5ft 6in gauge 2-2-2 built on the 100th anniversary of the engine by La Maquinista Terrestre y Maritima as construction number 649. Kept at the Vilanova i la Geltru Railway Museum, Vilanova I la Geltru, Catalonia Province, Spain; and also pictured on my Surviving World Steam Locomotive CD-ROM.

A spanish friend sent some additional info on this event. It was to mark the 150th anniversary of railway service between Reus and Tarragona, south of Barcelona along the coastline. A second locomotive that was there under steam was the RENFE 2-8-2+2-8-2 Beyer-Garratt.

The original loco was built by Jones and Potts of Newton le Willows, Lancashire. Four were supplied, they were of the "Crewe" type as used by the London & North Western Railway. Almost identical locos (except for the gauge) were supplied by the same firm to the London and Blackwall Railway.

"Columbine" built in 1845 is of the same type. It is on display at the Science Museum, London.
