Timken bearing box removal

Hi,

I have a wheelset from a heavyweight coach we are sending out to get profiled and need to get the bearing boxs off.

I know how the newer AP-2 Rotating end cap bearings are pressed on and off, but I haven't dissasembled one of these external box sets before.
End cover is removed, tri-bolt axle cap is off, Back box cover nuts loose. Can I put a piece of plate between the box studs and the wheel hub and use the nuts to press the box off, or does a small amount heat need to be applied to the cone to help separate it from the axle.

Thought I would ask before I break it.

You should not need to remove the journal boxes to have the wheels turned. Just send it out as-is, with the boxes in place. Generally, the wheel shop will only need to remove the front J box cover plate on one box to allow the axle to be rotated while truing the wheels.

I'm sending to Gunderson and they wanted the whole box off. They said with their current lathe it is too much trouble to chuck and drive it with the boxs still in place.

Most places want the boxes off for the same reason. Usually if you take the back plate off, they should with a little persuasion,come right off the axle. I assume these are grease filled and they have a bad habit of not wanting to come off when pulled on. Best method is to brace them even,use a come along in line with the box,and gentle pull them off even.Note: these things are HEAVY and should require two people to get them off.

The other reason they want the box off is that their AAR wheel shop certification is at risk if they do not recondition the roller bearing as part of their work. If it is off, then they are not responsible for the roller bearing.

Thanks, It sounds like I'm heading the right direction.

Yes they are grease filled.

I have it slung with the boom truck to balance the weight, and I'll use the rear box cover studs/nuts to press against the wheel hub. Using the two nuts on opposing sides as a jam/press it should give me a straight push and be more controlled then a tug with the comealong. I'll snug up easy and see if it starts to slide off.
