Can anyone point me to a resource photo of Norfolk Naval Shipyard saddle tanker #2? The loco is believed to have been scrapped, and never made it into preservation. I am trying to research specific informqation on the engine, and a photograph would be immeasureably helpful. I believe it might have been an 0-4-2T .

Dear Richard:
I know nothing about Norfolk Navy Yard No. 2, however No.5 survived until recently at a gravel pit near College Park, MD. The locomotive could be seen from MARC trains. Unfortunately it was scrapped c.2000. It was Vulcan c/n 2618 and it's photo can be found in The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America on page 74.

I remember writing to George Hart when he was director of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and inquiring if they would be consider preserving this locomotive. I received an expression of interest in reply but nothing further came of it. I was pretty young at the time and wasn't really in a position to take any direct action. I vaguely recall going over with an NRHS friend and looking for the engine which I believe was half buried in sand and gravel at the time.

Gentlemen: If not the same locomotive, certainly her twin! No question that the locomotive I am looking for has the same lines and dimensions as the loco pictured. What a pity nobody had funds or room, or perhaps even desire at the time. 2000 was late year to be scrapping steam. Sheet metal saddle tanks are not a problem, but perhaps her boiler and running gear were shot? You have to love tank locos.

Thanks for you help in the quest. It is most appreciated.

Richard - there is a decent chance the locomotive you want to mknow about is pretty close to new Hope Valley 17, another Vulcan built for a shipyard. They have a lot of technical information including drawings. Bob Crowley from NHVRR haunts this board on a regular basis, can probably put you in contact with Dave, Bill, Mike, et al.
