I noticed in the SLG&W thread that Dave mentioned that he lost a tank car of interest to scrappers. A few years ago I mentioned this but as times change, so do the readers here. IRM has 3 tanks cars in the St. Louis area that will be scrapped shortly. One of the cars (a fourth one) has been moved to our site and has been restored. Of the others, they are all approx. 1917-1920 vintage, two single shell single dome and the third an insulated similar car. Last used for in plant service by Amoco Chemicals.

All are friction bearing and have not had any brake work for years so they would certainly have to be moved by over the road semi. But they are available to any preservation group, free, or for the scrap value.

I would like to see at least one saved, but we do not have the resources to invest and merely relocating them to Union would not assure preservation.

For those interested in clever uses of tank cars, one of them is rumored to have about 50,000 lbs of concrete in its belly and was used as a scale test car in the plant!

I do not have digital pics and have not personally inspected them but some of our members have.
