Some of you may remember the West Shore Rail Excursions operation out of Lewisburg, Pa. in years past.

The fleet of ex-DL&W m.u. cars thay had is now in the custody of the North Shore/Nittany & Bald Eagle/Lycoming Valley Railroad "family" of central Pennsylvania short lines. Here's a shot of the fleet heading north from its operations base of Northumberland, Pa. to Williamsport for weekend excursions:

In spite of the paint, only the caboose, and maybe the baggage car, are authentic PRR. I believe the car on the far end is a former EL business car as well--or at least there's one of those about somewhere........

One of the railroads' officers was part of the crew that initially refurbished PRR K4s 1361 to operation in 1986-7; as I understand, he became a vocal critic of the later management and repair work, but I still view it as likely that 1361 will operate again on the Nittany & Bald Eagle if/when returned to operation (and the NBER now has welded rail and faster track!).

The baggage car is nee-NYC, as is the lightweight car in the consist.

Does anyone here know the history of the car between the lighweight car and baggage (i.e. the only one not in PRR paint)?

Many thanks,
Tom Cornillie

Tom,
I don't know the history, but from the looks of it I'd say it is a former CNJ coach. Those sure are some interesting windows.

Now you're reactivating my ancient memory.

I think one of the first WTSE cars to show up on the property was a former CNJ car, which had been gutted and converted to a table/dining car with folding chairs/tables. I seem to recall that it was a refugee (as was a PRR P70 also at West Shore) from the Adirondack Railroad operation in NY State. For those perusing your slides from 1984-1985, the clearstory table coach was painted black and the P70 was dark green.

Come to think of it, that's probably the P70 bringing up the rear of the pictured train. As I mentioned earlier, there is/was a former Erie Lackawanna business car, Amtrak-compatible and certified, that was the personal property of Richard Sanders, de facto owner/operator of the West Shore operation, but as far as I know it never made it onto a West Shore excursion train, is probably still owned by the Sanders family, and last I heard was in storage at an undisclosed, secure location along the Susquehanna Valley family of short lines. The Pennsy caboose is a personal possession of one of the Susquehanna Valley railroad officers, as I heard it.

I have also heard that the Susquehanna Valley preservationists had secured a surplus car from the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona, and said car is now restored and on display adjacent to the Lycoming County Historical Society museum in Williamsport, Pa. Can anyone confirm this? I believe it was the "Nicholas Firestone".

I do not know the history of the "unmarked" car in the photos but the coaches are Erie MU cars painted Pennsy. They all belong to a principal of the NSRR. The caboose is his also. This was the equipment used in 2005 for the Museum's railfest trips on the NBER. He did aquire the Nicholas Firestone from the Museum, did a superb job in cosmetically restoring it, and it is on display in Williamsport.

Please, Lackawanna or Erie Lackawanna, but not just Erie-

Sorry,

Everyone around here simply refers to them in the abbreviated fashion as "Erie Cars".

Force of habit!
