| Post subject: | Clinton bridge |
This high bridge, on the Central Mass. Division of the Boston & Maine at Clinton, Massachusetts, was torn down in the 1970s, but the tunnel, just out of sight to the left, still exists. The route once extended from Boston to Northampton, Mass., but was severed in the middle by a 1930s hurricane and washouts. Commuter trains hauled residents into Boston in wooden coaches, pulled by 2-6-0s into 1956. This was the last line that B&M 1455 ran on. On the west end, there was a long, spindly bridge over the Connecticut River, which remains as part of a bike path. Too bad either end didn't survive. http://photos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo ... ydate%3A14 |
