Ran across these old 1930s photos of N&W 4-8-0s, and as most are just a number or two off from the ones in the Roanoke scrapyard, I'm wondering about possible replacements for the missing tenders. The 1119 and 1121 (taken in 1932) have USRA-like tenders, which resemble some seen in China, except for the equalized trucks. The 1133, apparently a later photo, has a larger six-axle tank, of which there are said to be parts of two still in the scrapyard. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... +w1119.jpg http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... +w1121.jpg http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... +w1133.jpg And 2-8-0 914: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... n+w914.jpg If one were to magically find funds to save these locomotives and acquire tenders for their display, what would be the most likely scenario for getting tenders for them? Do any suitable tenders remain in North America, converted to snowplows, water cars, etc., or at RR museums or tourist RRs? Are there any useful parts or scrap steel in the Roanoke yard that might be helpful in replicating tenders? Any ideas? |

The 1119 tender looks pure USRA, but I'm not sure where the N&W would have robbed it from. Perhaps an old mallet? It looks like the smaller USRA version and I would think the mallets would have had the elongated version. |

Isn't there a tender off a USRA pacific at the Southeastern Trans. Museum in Duluth ,Georgia? It's not on their websight but they do show a tender off an L&N "Big Emma" 2-8-4,that might look good mated to one of the 4-8-0s.It would not be authentic, but the N&W did buy used tenders from the C&O. |
