Post subject:  Washouts West of Phoenicia, NY on the Catskill Mountain RR

I recently posted some satellite images on NERAIL that show the washouts west of Phoenica in great detail. I've combined them with some photos on the ground that help to illustrate the situation. We hope hext year to clear the tracks in these areas to better assess the situation, and dismantle the hanging, bent or dangling rails and put them in storage.

First Washout between MP 27.9 to 28. This occurred in April, 2005:

Second washout, between MP 28.45 to MP 28.65. Western part was partly restored by the state/county.

Third washout, between MP 28 to 28.875, which occurred about 1987. The woodland creek bridge, a double girder bridge, was removed by the county and put in storage after it was undermined. About 250 feet of track west of the bridge are also washed out.

There are plans by the state and county to repair the first washout to prevent further erosion of the creekbed. When that happens, the CMRR will reinstall the track in this area.
