According to a post on Railroad.net, Norwood and St. Lawrence 2-6-0 #210 at Steamtown may return to her home in the north country for tourist service.

It would be really great if Steamtown could take a leadership role in the leasing of locomotives for operation on distant roads, especially in situations like this where the locomotive would return to home rails. It may be the only way for large collections to ensure long-term care of some artifacts.

Last I knew, the original N&StL wooden enginehouse was still there, and there even used to be a water plug nearby, which may or may not still be extant. Steamtown has apparently been unable to care for much of its holdings and the locomotive has no relevance to Scranton, but a handful of volunteers could probably do at least a decent cosmetic restoration on the engine, perhaps housing it in its original home. If I recall, one axle was badly rusted when it left Vermont, so likely some bearing work would be required to make it rollable.

I wonder if N&StL #210 is one of the "Cuban Sugar Industry" locomotives? The Cooke Works of ALCO built a number of these locomotives of various wheel arrangements for Cuba when that country had a boom in the world sugar market after World War I. Some of these locomotives were custom ordered by the various sugar refineries, but Cooke also built some "stock" engines for anticipated future orders. When the European sugar beet industry started its recovery in the early 1920's, many of the locomotives were undeliverable and were subsequently sold to buyers in the United States. The double sand domes and the date built (1923) makes me think that this Mogul may be one of those engines. Anyone know for sure?

No. N&St.L #210 is larger and heavier than the "Cuban" stock engines Cooke built. But Lowville & Beaver River #1923 (2-8-0) in the Steamtown collection is a "Cuban".

While Steamtown can be faulted for their care of the actual artifacts, the "biographies" they have compiled for these locomotives are very good, and a good start for anyone wanting to actually restore them.

Incidently the L&BR enginehouse, turntable and track once used by the 1923 were still in use last I knew, so it could return to an appropriate home should the locals desire it back. I think the N&StL mainline was removed some years ago, after being used for a time to store excess St. Lawrence RR boxcars.

Another NY shortline Cuban 2-6-0 was Bath & Hammondsport 11, currently for sale at Middletown, NY. I've heard from a co-worker that its onetime wooden enginehouse at Hammondsport, NY was recently razed to make way for lakefront condos, though there is a museum nearby with enough space to display it inside.
