Post subject:  Alco motor generator set needed

Does anybody know where I can get a motor generator set for an Alco RSD 5? It is used to generate a 110 volt, 480 cycle AC current to supply a field to the main generator, and weighs about 200 lbs..

Or... does anybody know of an upgrade (i.e. solid state, or other) that can be used to replace an MG set, in an older Alco?

CSRM has scrapped out a couple old ALCOs. Might try them?

Can you have yours rebuilt?

Tom,

I know they had a bunch of ex-military MRS-1s that were up for disposition.

FYI, there was a 'solid state' replacement designed and manufactured by GE to replace the 'MG' set, which is actually a DC motor driving an alternator. I doubt very many roads peformed that type of upgrade on Alco equipment.

In any event, the 'MG' set is nothing more than a 65VDC motor driving a
small alternator. Save for brushes/bearings, not much to fail.
