Post subject: What Happened to the Dover Harbor??
PostPosted: Mon Oct 08, 2001 7:11 pm

Heavyweight Pullman Kitchi Gammi Club substituted for the Washington DC Chapter's Dover Harbor this weekend on Altoona Railfest's excursions around the Horseshoe Curve.

Trackside rumors reported two versions of what happened to the Dover Harbor: One, the car was involved in an accident that damaged the car while en route to or from a recent assignment; and that the car fell off its jacks during an Amtrak inspection of the car and was due to be repaired (at Amtrak expense).

Nothing seems to show up at the Washington DC NRHS website about this. Any answers?

I just looked at the news section of the Washington DC NRHS website and found the following:

DOVER HARBOR ON THE MEND - (Article Posted on 9/30/2001)

The DOVER HARBOR's repairs are making good progress as expected.

DOVER HARBOR'S OFFICIAL STATUS - (Article Posted on 8/31/2001)

Washington, D.C: The Washington, D.C. Chapter, National Railway Historical Society's heavyweight parlor car DOVER HARBOR is now undergoing repairs after being damaged in a low-speed collision on August 12. DOVER HARBOR, which was at rest and unoccupied, suffered minor damage to the vestibule end. There were no injuries. The Washington, D.C. Chapter's Mechanical & Equipment Committee and structural engineers have surveyed the damage, and repairs are currently underway. The Chapter has decided to use this unscheduled downtime to accomplish other upgrades and maintenance so that the DOVER HARBOR will be even better when she takes to the rails in a few months. Passengers holding reservations for previously scheduled trips aboard DOVER HARBOR will be contacted by the reservations agent within the next few weeks with further information concerning the trips.

****

So, it appears that the damage happened a couple of months ago. And that the work was still going on a week ago.

Dover Harbor was injured by Amtrak while in the shop. Amtrak is paying for repair as well as substitution of car during Altoona Railfest.

Sandy,

My understanding was that the car was in the shop at Ivy City for some work with one truck out and the car resting on jack stands. From a good source in the private car world, I'm told a switching move was made that bopped the car, knocking it off the jackstands and doing quite a bit of damage.

It's a damn shame to see a beautiful heavyweight like that abused, especially in the hospital, but I'm hopeful she'll be back out soon. Jim
