What's the odd looking cylinder head cover arrangement on 2472 about?

Looks like some extended studs to open a gap in the head/cylinder fit, probably to allow towing without taking the rods down. As shiny as the engine is in that shot, and with the open cylinder heads, this may have been taken just before it was stuffed and mounted for display.

For those who don't know:

SP 2479 is currently being restored in San Jose by the California Trolley and Rail Corp.

SP 2472 has been restored and operated by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum. It is currenty undergoing another major rebuilding which is nearing completion. Due to the GGRM losing their lease in San Francisco they are planning to move the 2472 and the rest of their collection for storage on the Pacific Locomotive Association's Niles Canyon Railway.

SP 2467 has been restored by the Pacific Locomotive Association. The work was done at the Oakland Terminal Railroad yard in Oakland. It stayed there for a couple of years then moved to the GGRM museum at Hunters Point and was stored there. The last time it operated was a double header with the 2472 before both of them had their tube time run out. The PLA needed to move it off the GGRM property but did not have plans to do the form 4 boiler work in the near future so a deal was made with the California State Railroad Museum to loan it to them for ten years. It is currenty on display facing the Cab-Forward in the main museum in Sacramento. Except for the expired boiler certificate, just add water, fuel and some burning waste and it could be fired up. Maybe someday the 2472 and 2467 can operate in Niles Canyon together.

How have CTRP and co. fared to date on the loco's restoration?

Progress on the 2479 is slow but moving forward. Their big focus is working with the City of San Jose to establish a location for their museum.
