Probably taken at Blue Island, Illinois, not long before it was scrapped. Most are up close shots.

A full load of coal in the tender of an engine that has been sitting for years?!!! That's a good way to speed up the deterioration process.

Hey, the scrappers didn't care about the full load of coal. Probably made their job easier.

One of the two absolutely worst travesties in railroad preservation, and both executed by agencies defying and twisting the law to their own nefarious purposes. What possibly gain was made by Jensen leaving his Burlington O5 and this elegant GTW Pacific in the paths of the Philistines who cut them up? A total loss on the parts of all involved. Was Jensen really such a lousy steward of his property or a victim of circumstances?
My God, it still makes me shudder.

Here's the story according to steamlocomotive.com:

It would seem that all parties involved
are a bit at fault and it was one of those
events that just had everything go
wrong.
It is pretty hard to excuse METRA for
cutting it all up. It is hard to excuse
Jensen for his strange refusal to
let IRM at least help him out.
As the site says, it would
have been worse if the engine
cut up was a Hudson or a T1.
But remember, the last of
those examples went to
the torch under not too
dissimilar circumstances.

Who said anything about the scrappers? Generally speaking it is not a good idea to leave coal in any engine. Not necessarily just 5629.

my point was that any deterioration caused by the coal left in the tender is really not a consideration since the loco met a cruel and untimely end at the hands of scrappers in 1987. I doubt emptying the tender of coal would have changed that.
