I don't know if you've experienced the trouble that a hot steam locomotive cab brings when you want a candy bar without turning into a puddle of chocolate, but I've found the best solution- the Pay Day. It actually tastes better and is easier to eat when it's warm, and since it's only peanuts and carmel it doesn't melt! (except those Pay Day avalanches)
Also, that foil that pop tarts comes in isn't really foil, and won't last long on a hot surface, so don't try it!

Shouldn't this be in the classifieds? ;)

Actually, those meltable candy bars have their place. I know an engineer who will put Hershey bars on top of the boiler and, when melted, pops the corner of the wrapper open and drinks down the molten chocolate. I've not tried this, but others say it is really good and a heck of a pick me up (useful and the tail end of the day I suppose).

I prefer freezing a Snickers bar, then leaving it on the window sill so long as I dont knock it off with my elbow when I reach down to grab the overflow for the injector. It usually stays pretty unmelted, and is great with a cup of tea on the trip home from Silverton.

Does this mean we can find treats when we hike along the ROW or is the track department advised where to look when that errant elbow sends the snack aflying off the sill?

If I have some candy or some snack in my grip and we pass a tie gang or something, I'll throw them whatever I can as we pass, epecially in the summer if it's a hot day and they're working ties. The roadmaster will think highly of you if you can get him a few pieces of chocolate. When we stop at the tanks down the road, I'll usually leave a cup of coffee on the track for the patrol.
