Here are 3 photos of the new boiler for WW&F Ry #9, ex Sandy River #5. We have had many people asking so I figured I post a few.

The design was completed and reviewed by our inspector about 3 months ago. We have tacked the barrel courses, upper wrapper and the drilled side sheets (yes, this is a key hole boiler). Next, will be the instilation of the flanged throat sheet and the backhead. Also, the crown sheet has been flanged and drilled for stay holes. If anyone is in the Boothbay Maine area, please stop by and check in on the progress. Once the operating season is over in October, we look forward to putting most of our time in completing the boiler. I will post more photos as we progress along.

That's great news, thanks for posting the photographs. I always try to put a little time in volunteering down in Alna, but I just never get down there enough.

Defiantly one of the success stories of rail preservation - any historic preservation for that matter.

What is a "key hole" boiler?

I am sure others can describe it better, but "keyhole" refers to the shape, like an antique keyhole. If you were standing in the cab looking at the backhead, the roundness of the rear course is slightly wider than the sides of the firebox -- thus the keyhole idea. Sorry couldn't find a better picture to illustrate...

More progress on the new boiler for WW&F No 9. Yesterday hot-forming of the backhead took place in the shop at Boothbay. It is a thing of beauty!
