X90 shop switcher at Shoreham roundhouse, Minneapolis, August 1933. Engine and this part of roundhouse still exist, turntable gone (I've heard reinstalled at Marshalltown, Iowa?). X90 converted back to 0-6-0 with tender for display at Manitowoc, Wisconsin http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?o ... soox90.jpg. Decapod 950 ore dock switcher at Ashland, Wisconsin, undated, where it remains today on display: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?o ... soo950.jpg |

You need to drop the period from the end of the first link: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?october00/10-26-00/soox90.jpg Scott |

http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?o ... soox90.jpg. Anybody got a photo of the X90 converted back to a regular 0-6-0 with tender? I have never seen one. I believe that the original number may have been 321; is that the number she now wears? Les |

Les, Google is your friend. I typed in "Soo 321", and the third hit was the Surviving Steam Locomotives web site (the one before it was a link to a picture of Soo SW 1200 321). Clicking on Manitowoc, WI brought up the thumbnail to the photo at this link: http://parkengines.railfan.net/WI/ It looked better a couple of years ago; it actually had a headlight. The tender is somewhat newer that the locomotive, it came from 0-6-0 2327, built for the Wisconsin Central by Brooks in 1908. The tender was purchased off the scrap line at the same time as the engine with the thought of converting it back to a tender engine. Some additional data on Soo 321: Built by: Rhode Island in 1887, originally Minneapolis Sault Ste. Marie & Atlantic 38. Weight on driving wheels as a tender engine: 95350 Weight on driving wheels as a tank engine: 117960 Tractive force: 21150 |

Never delivered, instead went to the Soo Line as their 600, later rebuilt as a simple expansion engine and renumbered 950. Decapods never found any favor on the Soo, neither did Baldwins, for that matter. I have no idea why they bought it, other than it was cheap. It spent many years pushing ore up onto the dock at Ashland, WI, where it is now on display. Weight on drivers: 190,250, T.F. 47090. |

Dennis: Thanks for all of the info and the website with the photo of X90/321. Got to admit that I think she might have looked better as a tank engine. And she was pretty "ugly" in that configuration! Too bad they didn't save the "front end" of Soo 2327. Those B-23 class 0-6-0's were pretty good looking engines. Les |
