Just read on Mid Contintent RR Musuems members forum, that Scott Lindsey on Steam Operations Inc has done a pre-exam of the Western Coal & Cokes {4-6-0} wheel sets and they are going to Chattenooga for rework. I am so glad to hear this. The tires were down to minimum thickness, at least that was what I was told, and they looked pretty thin. I am pretty sure the axles needed to be trued up, though I don't think they were real bad. With all the work done on the boiler I am glad to see the drivers done professionally. There was mention of other running gear being inspected, but no mention of the work being farmed out so I don't know if there is going to be more work going out or not. In the shop area Mid Continent has 2 workers working full time in the shop over the winter this year. Donations have made it possible for the 2 guys to work all winter, so there is steady work being done now. We all wish things were moving faster, but unless donations keep coming in, money will be a big factor on when the job gets done. Talked with the owner of the Polson #2 {2-8-2} last week. He was laid up due to family health issues, but Gary Bensman has been down at Milw Boiler working on things, so progress continues there. I was told that all the stay bolts are in the side sheet patches {not bucked yet}. The hope is to have the new throat sheet and belly patch in place and fitted by the first week in January. Can't remember for sure, but I think the belly patch is fitted and ready to weld. Every thing is sequencal in what gets done next. I hope to be down at the boiler shop myself during the next 3 weeks and will get some pictures to post with my new digital camera. I have wished I had a camera to document the Polsons boiler repair progress for a long time. With school I have not had the time to get down there and help out like I would of liked too. Even with the progress of work being done, a whole lot of work remains on both engines. When they are done, then we have to figure out a good water supply and access it. I don't think anybody wants to put Baraboo River water in our boilers again, bad Juju in that water. Our coaling operation will probably have to be completely redone as well. I don't think our water tower has had water in it for 5 years and the wood is probably rotten now or at least in need of repair. I think a free cookout with lot's of free beer will be in order for the day when our two parts engines are running around the property again. We shall overcome! Merry Christmas folks, John. |
