Much has been made over the years of former London & North Eastern 4472's 1969-1973 junket throughout the United States (and subsequent return to the UK and visit to Australia). However, there were nine British carriages that joined the locomotive for its tour. To the best of my knowledge, many of the cars ended up in a "Victoria Station" project in San Francisco, and according to one online forum the former "Devon Belle" observation may still be there:

"150 Chestnut Street, San Francisco, California (Western Athletic Clubs Inc.): 114 Observation Car (ran as "14"). Built in 1918 as a LNWR ambulance coach, acquired by the Pullman Car Company and rebuilt in 1921 as a Kitchen Car, the frame was reused in 1947 to build Observation Car number 14, used on the Devon Belle (London <-> Ilfracombe)."
This car is supposedly the target of an appeal by Britain's Swanage Railway (an excursion/heritage line) to repatriate her from San Francisco:

Meanwhile, the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin had these two:

- 246 Kitchen Car "Lydia". Built in 1925, served in Italy until 1928.

- 247 Parlour Brake "Isle of Thanet". Built in 1925 as Parlour Car "Leona", served in Italy until 1928.

Both of these cars were successfully repatriated by the Swanage Railway in 2000, according to various websites.

Does anyone else know for certain what happened to any of the other cars? Any leads, website, etc. appreciated..........

Sandy: I have a Super 8 movie of the Flying Scotsman and train traveling west through Lorain (OH) on the N&W (ex NKP). So I can say it at least traveled west on the NKP through northern Ohio. My camera was set up, just west of the station and there were two old gentlemen sitting there, on a bench, enjoying the sunny day. The gates come down and the train blows through and neither one of them so much as looked up. You'd think an English steam engine and passenger train was an everyday occurance. Go figure... I don't remember the year, but I certainly remember that day.

When 4472 and her train stopped for water on her westbound trip through Brockville, Ontario, she wasn't the only steam locomotive in town.

CN 6218 was sitting a few tracks away on one of the old shop tracks, although not under steam. Presumably she was being moved to either Montreal or Toronto and stayed with the diesel power from the train.

There was much advance publicity for 4472 and a huge crowd turned out at CN's Brockville station to see her, but I suspect few noticed the beautiful Northern sitting nearby. This ten year old budding railfan did though, and dragged his mom and her camera over to see the old girl!
