Again from the NGDF. Marty Knox, steam guru at the Huckleberry RR in Michigan has apparently retired. It seems like the kind of job that one would retire to rather than from, but best wishes anyway to Marty. http://www.ngdiscussion.net/cgi-bin/NGD ... read=85827 |

Actually, December 23 was the last day I will be there when we are operating. The Christmas trains will run again December 27 - 30, but I will be in Pennsylvania visiting my family. My official last day will be February 28, but I am using up my vacation and personal time between now and then. I have been the person in charge for 17 years, and I have accomplished most of what I wanted to. Running a steam railroad is difficult enough; running a steam railroad as a department of a government agency is a challenge I'm tired of. I'm not going to disappear - I will continue running Ridge Locomotive Works, building boilers for live steam locomotives and helping on full size locomotive projects. |

Glad to know you'll still be around and haven't converted to stamp collecting or golf. When I last saw the 464 in the late-1960s, it looked about ready for scrap. Hard to believe it would be steaming again today. I'll have to get out there to see it, but probably after my last "cab ride" in 20 months. |

Marty shared his list of jobs waiting to be done with me in Sacramento. I think he will be as busy as ever, just with less administrivial BS to contend with - a step towards happiness if there ever was one. Best wishes to you Marty, and thanks for all your contributions to the industry. Huckleberry is in good hands with Paul Dalleska now, I don't think we have to worry about the future of steam there for any but political reasons, beyond control. dave |

Best wishes to you and Karen - and continued involvement in keeping the legacy of steam alive. Don't forget to leave your hard hat where Paul can easily find it. Chances are he's likely to suffer at least initial superficial injuries banging his head against a wall.... |

Paul brought along his ancestral horned helmet. I pity the fool who gets in his way. dave |
