Whither three Burlington cars: #253 'Silver Cup'. #254 'Silver Kettle', and #321 'Silver Patio', once lately owned by VIA Rail Canada? |

The Cup never went to VIA. It was owned by Randy Parten for many years but never rebuilt and was sold at auction to a private party several years ago. It had some vandalism and fire damage in the dome. The Kettle and the Patio were both in the early stages of conversion to "Skyline" dome coffee shop cars by VIA Rail when work was stopped. Both cars were gutted down to the car structure. Work on the Kettle had progressed to the point where some of the old windows had been blanked and new ones cut in. The dome stairs had actually been re-located to the "short" end of the car from the "long" end. Some interior panels and walls had been installed. This car would have been different from the ex-CP Skyline cars in that VIA did not plan to add a vestibule. The Patio had not had any interior work done after stripping, but some under car work had started such as wiring and HEP recepticle boxes. Recently, all remaining ex-US domes that VIA Rail had, including the Kettle and the Patio, were finally sold to a group of owners based in the midwest. Since these 2 cars are still basically shells it is clear they will never be restored but will be used as the basis for future PV conversions. |
