The last class one steam locomotive in active service worked out of this building, which now houses equipment for the Leadville, Colorado & Southern tourist RR. The engine, C&S 2-8-0 641, retired in 1962, sits rusting nearby, near the station. The roundhouse previously served the C&S narrow gauge South Park line from Denver, until the Leadville-Climax section was standard gauged in 1943. The building was enlarged and the turntable removed at that time. http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=177351 The Red Devil coal loader, seen here with the 638 (today at Trinidad, Colorado) was located about where the photographer was standing in the roundhouse photo. The loader was removed when the rotary plow was donated to the Colorado RR Museum in the 1970s. http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00401253+RR-1253 |

Yes, restoration is underway, though it has been a slow process. The building now belongs to a doctor in Denver who has been active in preservation there, and the Kazels, who began the project, are still involved. There has been considerable roof, door and window work done and what is believed to be one of the turntables used there set back in the pit, minus operating hardware. http://www.narrowgauge.org/ngc/html/exc ... -como.html Although it is probably the most historic narrow gauge building left in Colorado, it does not get a lot of attention. As the site remains open, with the derelict depot and still-in-use eating house nearby, it has great potential to become a living history museum again with enough time and investment. Five C&S narrow gauge locomotives and several freight and passenger cars remain as well. Likewise, the Leadville site has much potential to be restored as a standard gauge engine terminal of the 1940s-50s. |
