But with plans to cosmetically restore it. http://www.ghra.ca/6167.html

That's good. I hope they get some good advice from people who really know what they are doing.

Yep, was there last friday, took some shots of her. Not much different from the photos posted by Bob. The only thing i noticed was the sign saying they were going to do the cosmetic in 2006, and an asbestos sign on the fence. Other than that, still looked in very rough shape. A coat of paint would do wonders, as much of the boiler/firebox is in much better shape than 6218 in Fort Erie.

Good enough industrial base in Guelph, so that a fund of donations and cash might be raised in the community. This is another CNR loco that deserves a second look as an operative locomotive. How do the 6167 and 6218 compare in terms of mechanical shape? There are also 6200 in Ottawa, displayed with her parts mostly stored indoors, 6153 at Delson, and the little beauty in Toronto, which is supposed to be in the best shape of all of them.

I've often wondered how "used up" 6167,6218 & 6153 were when they were retired.

6167 and 6218 were pretty much cooked when they were pulled from service. I couldn't tell you about 6153.

6213 is probably THE best kept park display engines around. I don't know how worn out it was when it was retired, but a gentleman by the name of Grant Kingsland has spent many years keeping it up cosmetically. He has also kept many of the mechanical parts freed up.

Grant is still a relatively young man too (40's), so I assume he will continue the excellent job he has done for many years to come.

"Cooked" meaning what? Tubes shot? Parts worn out beyond repair? Metal burned thin?
6153 was used in fan trip service during the earliest years of steam - Diesel transition, so it might be in fairly strong shape.
These are some of the most beautiful and classically "Canadian" steam locos I've ever seen.

6218 is in extremely poor condition. You would be looking at a wheels up restoration. most likely a complete boiler/firebox replacement, that's how bad the deterioration is. THe grates are heavily deteriorated, as is the ashpan and firebox. When the asbestos was removed 10+ yrs ago, they didn't getit all for starters, and when they put domes and such back on the engine, they did not secure them. The tender is in poor shape too. Rebuilding 6218 would be an incredibly huge undertaking/expense. 6213 on the other hand, as Rob said, is in great shape. Grant Peter and David have done a great job keeping that engine looking the way she does, and she's by far the best of the bunch. 6218 is welded to the rails, and i highly doubt she'd even survive any type of movement, without breaking it down into individual components (frame/wheels, boiler, etc.)

I remember several years ago the UCRS used to open 6213 for viewing during the CNE (Toronto's fall fair) and had some of the air-operated parts such as the bell and reverser hooked up to an air compressor. One of the UCRS members told me over $1 million had been spent on it's cosmetic work but I found that a stretch, even though it was/is in beautiful shape. There was a group here in Toronto looking to get her operating again but I think it dispanded a while ago. Perhaps someone else on the board knows the story.

You name it, it was shot!

About 6 years ago there was a group led by David Garon who had as their main objective creating a museum in the John St. roundhouse in Toronto. A secondary project was to restore the 6213 to operating condition. This group ground to a halt for a variety of reasons that could take up their own thread. They didn't ever get as far as raising money for the restoration or finding a place to run it.

Rather remarkable, in a horrible sort of manner, that locomotive can come off service, be placed into a static display, and go the Hell so rapidly! Here are two paired locos of the same series, living out regualr service to become premier "showboats" for the parent railroad. Both have hours of trip service alone and in a pair, then each is donated to separate cities for display. 6167 looks poorly on the outside, 6218 looks better. Yet 6167 is purported to be in better shape than the younger sister locomotive. My hopes are that their mutual conditions are far better than what we are reading about.
6200 is parked on the front lawn of the Ontario Museum of Science and Technology, sealed, painted, and with all "stealable" parts removed for safe keeping. I'd like to know what her reconditioning critique might look like as well.
