That is an impressive job and a nice website explaining what they did. I note that they are working on getting a building for the engine, most important if they don't want to start over in 7-8 years. Good to see them working on proper details like the boiler jacket and cab interior items.

One question on soda blasting. Does it leave grit like sandblasting that can get into bearings, or is it relatively harmless? Does it require extensive protection of moving surfaces like sandblasting does?

Soda is increasing in popularity for railroad preservation just for the reason you mentioned. It isn't as abrasive as sand, so the job usually takes a bit longer, but it is much easier on the bearings.
