Wonder where in Clifton Forge this would go-with the C&OHS collection it its current location? Or-what is the current status of the former C&O shop facilities in Clifton Forge? Would the 614 and the C&OHS collection both end up at the shops? Are steps being taken to do something constructive with the shops?

Sometimes we railfans are our own worst enemies. The facts are that we are in discussions with the good folks at the COHS regarding the POSSIBILITY of having 614 go to Clifton Forge in the future.
These discussions are on-going and no definitive agreement has yet been reached. Both parties are in agreement that there are many positive compelling reasons to attempt to achieve this end and are working together towards that,but are NOT there yet.
As the old WW11 saying went-"loose lips sink ships", lets hope that the loose lips here don't end up sinking this ship?
You can be confident that if an agreement is reached it will be announced on the COHS site asap.

Seriously, kudos to all involved working on a positive future for this artifact. It ties in rather nicely with the recent discussions of what is "right" for #833, #765 and #4876.

I was not being critical of you Mr.Blay but rather the bloke who put the original post on the modelers site. He was asked at the time of the meeting to treat this confidentially and obviously has either a hearing or memory(or both) problem.
Let's just hope it doesn't kill the deal?

There's a tech-oriented web site called Slashdot - any comment that uses the words "my girlfriend" gets a stock response:

I propose that the appropriate response to the original thread should be:

Here are current Views of the C&O Clifton Forge VA Shops. Long gone is the roundhouse and radial tracks though the turntable and diesel shops are still there. Please look over the attached photo's to see what could be used. The City of Clifton Forge has the shops and various Groups have approached the city on varying degree's of use over the years for the facility, as of yet nothing has been decided.

If the pits are still there, and can be dug out, this looks like a fine place for another RMPa style pole barn modular roundhouse kit to be constructed. With a brick fascade, not too costly and could be made to resemble the original.

I was under the impression that the turntable had been removed from Clifton Forge sometime after 1993, so seeing photos to prove that wrong is much appreciated. I just watched a DVD with my son the other night of the Virginia Central "Mountain Climbing Pacifics" series of trips in which there are some long-distance (poor) views of Mr. Showalter's locomotives being turned. I wonder if that table will ever turn another steam engine?

PS: Yes John, I only posted to bring attention to the fact that I have a son!

The Table is still there and is still operable, don't ask me how I know this ;o). Please reference my pictures above the table and shops have not changed since these pictures were taken other than time on the calendar, a couple of windows here and there. Other than that the shops have been holding there own since there use as Diesel repair and overhaul. Expected weathering due to abandonment and vandalism is visible and has taken its toll.

Mr. Pullman -

The coal dock looks pretty complete which is surprising if it is. Most of these concrete coaling stations had the "metal works" cut off for scrap when they were no longer needed. Just how complete is the dock?

I don't suppose there are any water columns around are there?

(writing on the quick here) This site has potential to interpret the change in both railroad maintenance practices and railroad industrial architecture. The presence of both a C. 1890-1910 machine shop (based on my reading of the building) and a C. 1950 diesel shop - would offer strong preservation and interpretation opportunities. Also, the roundhouse area may offer archaeological opportunities that may further bolster this site's significance. Note too, this is about in as good as condition that one will find a railroad shop that is not in use.

I think that the history and current condition of this site would make an excellent candidate for a RYPN article - and from this post it sounds like there are several people who are quite knowledgeable about this site. Likewise, such an article would likely be of use in supporting the further preservation of the site.

What do you consider "not too costly" Dave? Is there any sort of documentation out there as to how this was done, and the costs involved?
