Post subject:  C&O Turntables

While reading about the C&O 614 And the Clifton Forge shops I saw the picture of the turntable and remembered seeing reference to it on the prints we have on ours. I not only found it but four others as well. They were all 100’ Bethlehem Steel built and done on two contracts.

Contract # EB2128 10/22/20
Clifton Forge Va. 100’ 3 phase 220v
Ashland Ky. 100’ 3 phase 220v

Contract # EB2141 11/5/20
Silver Grove Ky. 100’ 3 phase 440v
Peach Creek W Va. 100’ 3 phase 220v
Russell Ky. 100’ 3 phase 220v

This list runs up to 1923 and I know it is not a complete list of all of the C&O turntables. I know sometime in 1924 the turntable in Hinton W Va. Was upgraded from a 100’ to a 115’ Bethlehem Steel turntable.

How many other turntables did they have and, how many still exist?

Quite a few yards had them on the Huntington Div, Russell had 2 130ft turntables at one time. Huntington, Handley, Paint Creek at Kingston had a small turntable it was be enough to turn a Atlantic or Pacific on. Danville and Elk Run Jct both had 100ft turntables. Identical to the one at Peach Creek which is still there and they still use from time to time.

Hi All,
An Update
The turntable at the Clifton Forge Shops is now a 115 foot turntable. so the 100 foot one must have been replaced
