Speaking as a newspaper person, that's actually a pretty good headline. The South Carolina Press Association's annual contest has a category for headline writing. Some of the winners are downright painful. I don't remember if the SCPA site has the winners' content posted, but the site is at http://www.scpress.org/. It's hard to have fun with a newspaper article; the headline is about the only place you can indulge yourself, and you can only do that with "soft news" pieces like this one. So don't be too hard on the reporter. At least they got the facts more or less right. Yeah, it makes the railfan in me cringe to see the word "choo-choo" associated with a railroad museum. But remember, to most people "choo-choo" and "railroad" are the same thing. Also, always remember this when dealing with the media, and this is coming from someone whose day job is in that industry (http://www.heraldindependent.com): if there is a way to screw up the facts and look like an idiot, a newspaper reporter will find it. If it's impossible to screw up the facts and look like an idiot, a TV news reporter will invent a way. |
