I was wondering what Trucking companies different orgainizations of have used for moving rail equipment that is not acceptable for interchange.

I appologize for using the T word here, but the class 1's put me up to it!!

Out here in San Francisco for moving out transit cars, we use Silk Road Transport out of Arkport NY (800 451 3879), and we have also used Sheedy drayage, who is local here in SF.

Both companies can move big equipment. Silk Road does specialize in this field. As an example I've seen them move double deck passenger cars from the Port of Baltimore to Hornell NY, and large articulated streetcars from Vallejo CA to San Jose CA. Currently they are delivering 11 PCC cars from Brookville PA to SF.

Depending on the equipment needing to be moved, you might find a local hauler as well.

We recently used Smith Brothers Crane (aka Certified Crane) and Homer Mann trucking to move our locomotive crane to Travel Town here in Southern California. I'd recommend both.

We've also used Contractor's Cargo in the past.

Check with Interstate 205 338 9595, they are located near my shop east of B'ham, their sole buisness is specialized loads. They have moved steam locos in the past.

We've used Intermountain Rigging & Heavy Haul (801-972-5581) out of Salt Lake City (www.intermountainrigging.com) to move almost everything that's currently at the Heber Valley Railroad (we've been isolated for the past 36 years). They moved locomotive #75 and 10 cars from Colorado to Utah, and also moved the UP 833 from Salt Lake City to Ogden. I'd highly recommend them.

Big Red Machinery Movers of Milwaukee have successfully moved railroad equipment, including the restored Pioneer Zephyr to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. We used them to move interurbans between Wisconsin and Michigan. Miner Rail Services in Donnelson Iowa have also moved rail equipment for us in the past.

We used Taylor Heavy Hauling from Antelope CA to haul a ballast regulator to the Western Railway Museum.

Schuster Transportation from Willits CA hauled a Shay from WRM to Willits.

Valley-Wide Movers, a house mover from Atwater CA hauled an ATSF heavyweight baggage car down to its new location in Stevinson CA.

I'm having some dealings with Intermountain right now on a large industrial tank that has to be transferred from a trailer to railcars for a one-mile move to get around an unexpected local bridge problem and then transferred back to truck for cross-country movement. Quite an unusual situation to say the least.

The railroads loose millions of dollars a year in potential revenue because they are so obtuse when it comes to dimensional loads. I've shipped big heavy things both by rail and by truck, and rail is definitely the last resort.

One option that has worked for us in the past is to check around for local house movers.

We had trouble getting reasonable quotes from some of the better known riggers when we moved B&H #11 from Middletown, NY to the WMSR. Dan Pluta hooked us up with Dave Tunison of D.C. Tunison Specialized Transportation. Dave hauls the Flagg Coal 0-4-0 when it travels. We got a great job at a favorable price.

Dailey Express out of Carlisle, PA, has also moved railroad equipment in the past.

I've had a couple experiences with Silk Road and was very impressed. They moved the 20 out of Rion when she went to Georgia, and they also moved some stuff to Wilmington NC and back that we loaned to Aaron Spelling Productions for a very, very bad TV pilot (I have a tape of it, it'd be a good flick for MST3K). The only negative thing I can recall was the speed at which our stuff went to Wilmington -- they were really haullin' @$$ up the freeway by all reports.

Don't knock trucking - railroads and trucking are both transportation. Many of us actually make our living in the trucking industry.
