It'd be nice to see the S-160 operate again, how many are preserved? One was repatiriated to the UK and is running on the North Norfolk Railway, near some relatives I mine, last I heard, with a very American whistle. Found some video clips of it, quite gutsy!

Actually, I think there are several S-160s in the UK.

Monte's came to him via the Alaska RR I think, but I'm not sure.

As TVRM will tell you, I don't think 610 at TVRM is technically an S-160. They do have an S-160, the Poppet valve loco, but 610 was built after WWII and while close, was a one-off by BLH.

While built as "disposable" locomotives, the S-160 has proven to be a durable design, and gave many Eastern European railroads much-needed motive power following WWII.

It is my understanding that #610 was built from leftover parts from a group of locomotives built for UNNRA after World War II. These were indeed slightly different from the original S-160s; and found their way to Europe, Mexico, and China; some may have ended up on both sides of Korea during the Korean War (the North Korean ones via either Russia or China.)

Collectively as a group I have documented 50 of these worldwide so far. Of these, about 35 are the original S-160s. There may be more. Most are preserved, but some in Greece, Turkey, and elsewhere are dumped and derelict; and three of the later ones built for the UNNRA and last used as stationary boilers in various depots in Belgium were scrapped; at least one as recently as August of 2002. Another one has just recently been restored to operational condition for use on tourist trains in China.

Another recent loss was a 3ft 6in guage Baldwin 0-6-6-0 (46530/1917) originally built for Russia but sent instead to the Phillipines after the October Revolution. It was last used as a stationary boiler at Pampanga Sugar Mill (PASUMIL) (closed), Florida Blanca (nr San Fernando), Luzon, Philippines; and had been derelict for some time before being scrapped in about 2006.

The only other surviving Baldwin Mallet (58239/1925) has been preserved at City Hall, Sagay, Negros, Philippines; it was the famous "haunted" locomotive used by Insular Lumber in nearby logging operations along with a Shay. It was extensively photographed by Colin Garratt and other gricers; and gained a reputation as a killer after several accidents that took several people with it. The last one sent it rolling downhill, after which it was taken apart and retrieved piecemeal. (The creaking and groaning it's tired bones made prior to being dumped did not help either.)
