106: Line Car - Built on 30 ft Flat Car. Scrapped SLG&W

107: Flat Car. Scrapped SLG&W

108: Box Car - Outside Braced. Unknown origin. Scrapped by the SLG&W after 1983.

Unknown: Water Car-UP tender. Scrapped SLG&W

201: Passenger Trailer. Scrapped SLG&W

301-313: Open cars - Built by SLG&W in 1922. Four survive. Two were donated to the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and displayed at their museum in Corinne, Utah. In 1979 the collection was “sold” to the Timpomogos Preservation society, operator of the Heber Creeper at the time. The entire Corinne SUP collection went to Heber City in 1980. After the end of Heber Creeper operations one, now numbered 306 (at this point no one is sure of the original number), went to the Western Railway Museum, Rio Vista Junction, California. The other remained on the old Heber Creeper property and is now on the Heber Valley Railroad, Heber City, Utah property but it needs a new home. The other two were donated by the SLG&W to the Promontory Chapter, NRHS which then donated to the Utah State Railroad Museum, Ogden, Utah. The one in the best condition is at the Western Railway Museum, Rio Vista Junction, California.

500-505: McGuire Cummings (1918) closed passenger cars. Rebuilt in 1950. 501 & 502 rebuilt as trailers in 1951. Others scrapped in July 1953. In the mid-1980s the 501 and 502 went to Hoskings Helicopter Service. Later the 501 went to the new Saltair interests and was on display at the new Saltair. The 501 was scrapped October 12, 13, 2006. The 502 still survives and remains in storage near a substation building about two miles east of the new Saltair.

Thanks Stan... Interesting to see a complete roster of the stuff that I've run across here and there over the years. I remember riding a on a brief excursion in the Silver Ranch about 1984?? when SLG&W ran the "fair trains" with the Promontory Chapter. Possibly the #711 was on that train, too.

Seems to me that a SLG&W box car was at "Old Las Vegas" near Henderson in the 1980s. It was visible from the front parking lot and I may have a photo of it.

Maybe this is the #100 you will have a separate post about.

One quick correction... the O&W closed in 1957, not 1951. I would also double check that it was the O&WHS that brought #104 back east. Me thinks they were not involved. She looks great now on the SRRofNJ in her second O&W scheme!

Is #105 still at WRM? Can we get her on the same flat car to bring the GPEX milk car back east? ;-)

SLG&W D.S.1 and D.S.2 did come to Utah in 1951. My misunderstanding about when the NYO&W closed.

From what appeared to be an accurate story on the internet about the D.S.1/NYO&W #104 going back east it seemed that the NYO&W Historical Society was involved. Would someone from the NYO&W Historical Society please let us know if this is correct?

I don't know if the O&W Society was involved but it went to the Adirondack Scenic in New York for work train service in Lake Placid. I do not know how often it was used. Never repainted. Then to the SRRNJ and repainted there.

here's #100 in July 1963 -- still in Salt Lake City. Looks as though there was a 'conversion' to MOW before going south to Henderson, NV

There has been confusion over the renumbering of New York Ontario and Western 101 and 105 when they got to the Salt Lake Garfield and Western. This confusion has been compounded by our inability to locate the General Electric serial number that should have been stamped into the locomotive’s frame. Based on available evidence, I have come to the conclusion that NYO&W 101 became SLG&W D. S. 2 and NYO&W 105 became SLG&W D. S. 1. It is D. S. 2, which we believe was formerly NYO&W 101, that is currently at the Western Railway Museum.

The Ontario and Western Railway Historical Society web site (www.nyow.org) has the following information which was provided by Doug Ellison former GM - Adirondack Scenic RR:

Data from NYO&W Purchasing Dept. Middletown, NY March 14, 1944:

NYO&W 101
Date Rec'd - 12/41
Loco # - 101
Make: GE
Description: 44 ton switcher
Loco s/n: 15028
Engine Numbers: 9J5564SP, 9J5566SP

Blue Card dated 1992 from SLGW RR:

Loco # DS-1
Model: 15032 (matches s/n of NYO&W 105)

The Caterpillar engine serial numbers on D. S. 2 match the two numbers provided above. D. S. 2 is part of the Western Railway Museum’s permanent collection. It is housed indoors is a secure building. As for the GEPX milk car, it is sitting here waiting for your. Please pick it up soon.

Great color photo of SLG&W boxcar number 100. My only photos of the boxcar while it was still on the SLG&W are balck & white.

Does anybody have a photo of this boxcar when it was in Las Vegas? I saw it there once. I thought I took a photo but after some searching I am not sure.

The Saltair, Garfield & Western boxcar, now on the property of the Heber Valley Railroad, has a unique history.

The boxcar was built as one of an order for the Salt Lake & Utah interurban railroad in 1924. (The Salt Lake & Utah Railroad ran from Salt Lake City, Utah to Payson, Utah. It was abandoned in 1946.) The cars were held on the property of the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railroad until paid for, but the Salt Lake & Utah could not pay for the boxcars, so they were eventually resold with the SLG&W purchasing one, the 100. The SLG&W used the car between its station on 1000 West South Temple and Saltair. At the end of service on the SLG&W it had been reduced to hide storage. (Sheep hides were stored in the car until the hides were sold. A very smelly business, the lowest job a boxcar is subjected to.)

In 1979 the boxcar was sold to a Western-theme amusement park near Las Vegas, Nevada. The park was not successful. It was closed in 1986 and the property sold to a real estate company. Salt Lake, Garfield & Western boxcar Number 100 sat abandoned on the property until 1999 when the property was sold again The new owners were going to destroy the historic car but the Heber Valley Railroad rescued it and shipped to Heber City, Utah.

Once on the Heber Valley Railroad property, some work was performed on the car then in 2001 an Eagle Scout project was initiated to repaint and reletter the car to the colors and lettering it had in Las Vegas. The lettering has not been finished.

This new paint is only the third paint and lettering job the car has ever had. The Number 100 was originally painted by the SLG&W with a very large, yellow ''SALTAIR'' on the left side, all other lettering was gray. By the early 1970's, when it was in hide service, windows had been cut in the walls and the lettering was all yellow with a small ''The SALTAIR Route'' on the right side. After the car was in Las Vegas blue was added around the ''Saltair''.

The car has no brakes and, while it has been used on some photo freight specials in the past, it is now on static display only.

From the "Doc" Lewis photo we now know the yellow lettering was applied then the windows cut in prior to 1963.

Thank you for the update, David. Are there long-term plans for restoration of D.S. 2?

One of the goals in the trade between the Western Railway Museum and the Feather River Railroad Society was for WRM to acquire Sacramento Northern 44 toner #146. WRM is located on the former SN railroad and owns 22 miles of it, so Sacramento Northern equipment is of special interest in our collection. The Museum already has Visalia Electric 44 tonner 502 that operates regularly. Since both 146 and 502 are MU 44 tonners interesting possibilities exist.

Salt Lake Garfield and Western D. S. 2, another MU 44 tonner, was to be stripped for parts and scrapped at Portola. So WRM also acquired this locomotive in order to save it. There are no immediate plans to return it to operating condition, but this is always a possibility. Being a prewar 44 tonner, D. S. 2 is quite a bit different than the other two locomotives, as they are both postwar.

Made additions to the D.S.5 history and corrected a typographical error.
