I know we have talked about this stuff before, but I wanted to get a few comments about the POR-15 coating from anyone that has used it before I shell out $88.75 a gallon for it.

Has anyone used it on rail equipment and how is it holding up? How did you prepare the surface? Just by wirebrushing loose rust and/or paint and then brushing it on? And overall, do you think that using POR-15 is a better solution than the common red lead primer and epoxy topcoat system that is more commonly used?

At $88.75 a gallon for a one coat system versus roughly $25 a gallon for primer and $25 a gallon for topcoat, it costs $38.75 a gallon more with POR-15. If it really does what the manufacturers say it can, then that would be a better value given the limited amounts of time that we have for painting and repainting equipment.

But the question remains, IS it a superior coating?

Well, on the roof of the WP805A, we had numerous rust areas and no way to blast them, or "bare metal" them, so we wirebrushed and applied POR15 as a primer. I believe it is not terribly UV resistant. It was then overcoated with "doped" acrylic enamel. So far, it has held well, some 6 years later, surviving Portola winters and high-altitude UV.
