Post subject: | MARITIME PRESERVATION: M/V ISLANDER |
The Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority is about to take delivery of the new ferry ISLAND HOME and as a result the M/V ISLANDER will probably be retired from service in the near future. The ISLANDER has served long and well with the Steamship Authority, more than 55 years in service, making her one of the longest lived vessels ever to serve with the line and its predecessor companies. She was rebuilt and repowered in 1994 with two EMD 8-645 roots blower engines with Rentjes reverse reduction gear boxes, and reportedly consumes less than 700 gallons of fuel per full day of operation between Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard. Depending on the long term plans of the Steamship Authority, this might be an opportunity for some interested group to preserve a vessel that has a long history of service, a dedicated following of admirers, and is presently seaworthy and operable. She has an enclosed vehicle deck and passenger lounge, and would be adaptable to use as a museum vessel. Of course the negative side of this is that she is a diesel, and being both practical to operate and maintainable with currently available parts, chances are that nobody will be interested in her at all. |
