A 1960s view showing a C&O E7 on a 4-H special train, pulling past the 1225 when it was still on display. The E7 became scrap steel long ago; the 1225 now runs.

Healthy trend, in my opinion.

That picture in itself is a rarity. How often did one see C&O E units on a college campus to begin with? Neat pic!

How often? Every football season, until about 1968, I think. Project 1225 founder Steve Reeves saw the last of these trains. The C&O and before them, the Pere Marquette used to operate passenger specials onto the MSU campus over the power-plant spur for various purposes. We've got a print of ROTC cadets shipping out on a troop train in the 1940's on this track behind a PM 2-8-0. The Artrain was parked here in the late 1970's, probably the last movement over this spur except for the one-way trip of the 1225 on its removal in 1980. This whole territory has since been eradicated by new construction.

"Seven years of college down the drain."
