What a sad sight! What is Guilford (erm...I mean Pan AM) using as its main shops now? Deerfield Mass.?

They do some work at East Deerfield, Mass. and some at Waterville, Maine. The company is much unloved by employees, shippers and governments alike. Glad I didn't have to go to work for them.

Guilford is a textbook example of how to suck the life out of consolidated railroad companies, then drive them into the ground. When will NS buy them out and make the improvements so desperately needed? So sad.

Post subject:  Sad . . . But not (too) bad

Just a reminder to any would-be preservationists who are interested in this site. Railroad erecting shops are remarkably resilant buildings. The main structure of post-1900 were designed to accomodate traveling cranes capable of carrying a locomotive. The walls and roofs are ancillary serve only to keep the elements away from workmen. The roofing material on such buildings was (generally) lightweight and designed to be replaced. While I am sure that there are issues that need to be attended to in the brick-work - I do not see anything in these photos that suggests that these buildings are in immediate danger structurally.

Also (and you knew this was coming) does anybody have more information on that passenger car? Is that an Osgood-Bradley dining car?

At least the buildings are still standing, which is a lot more then what other historians can say of their favorite railroad. As long as they remain so, there's a chance.
