The next Association of Railway Museum conventions will be: 2002 -- Dallas, Texas October 23 - 27 (hosts: Age of Steam and McKenny Ave.) This is the weekend after the end of the Texas State Fair. 2003 -- St. Louis, Missouri September 18 - 21 (host; Museum of Transportation) The ARM Board is exploring sites for the 2004 and later conventions. Member organizations desiring to host any of these should contact the Secretary of the Association. The Board would like to return to the West for the 2004 meeting. Hey guys, I know everyone would like to have the convention in their backyard without having to host it. We know that when the ARM meeting is in a region we get people from that area of the country who cannot travel long distances because of cost or time. For that reason we like to move the convention around the country. It is also the reason that we have established regional meetings in the spring of the year; we have just named a coordinator for the central region, Molly Butterworth of the Museum of Transportation. We are trying to reach the largest number of people and organizations as possible. The conventions need to have a host organization(s) that are willing and able to provide for the local arrangements and seminar development with the assistance of a ARM officer or Director. ARM also has a guide book with information about hosting conventions. You need to attend one of the meetings with open eyes to appreciate the work that goes into hosting a meeting. For your information here is a list of previous meeting sites: YEAR....MEETING SITE................HOST 1961‡...East Haven, Connecticut......Branford Trolley Museum 1962....Warehouse Point, Conn........Connecticut Electric Railway Association 1963....Worthington, Ohio............Ohio Railway Museum 1964....Washington, Pennsylvania.....Arden Trolley Museum 1965....Riverside, California........Orange Empire Trolley Museum 1966....Kennebunk, Maine.............Seashore Trolley Museum 1967....Elgin, Illinois..................Illinois Railway Museum 1968....Worthington, Ohio............Ohio Railway Museum 1969....San Francisco, California....Bay Area Electric Railroad Association 1970....East Haven, Connecticut......Branford Trolley Museum 1971....Baltimore, Maryland..........Baltimore Streetcar Museum 1972@...Rockford, Illinois...........Illinois Railway Museum 1973....Toronto, Ontario.............Ontario Electric Railway Historical Association 1974....Kennebunkport, Maine.........Seashore Trolley Museum 1975....Perris, California...........Orange Empire Trolley Museum 1976....Washington, Pennsylvania.....Arden Trolley Museum 1977....Golden, Colorado.............Colorado Railroad Museum 1978....Elgin, Illinois..................Illinois Railway Museum 1979....Edmonton, Alberta............Alberta Pioneer Railway Museum 1980....New Haven, Connecticut.......Branford Trolley Museum 1981....San Francisco, California....Bay Area Electric Railroad Association 1982....Baltimore, Maryland..........Baltimore Streetcar Museum 1983....Kennebunkport, Maine.........Seashore Trolley Museum 1984....Toronto, Ontario.............Ontario Electric Railway Historical Association 1985....Elgin, Illinois..................Illinois Railway Museum 1986....Pittsburgh. Hi Brian; Apart from Spencer, the southeast does seem historically underrepresented compared to the northeast and midwest. Of course, not much electric running down south until recently apart from NO. When we gewt up and running in Savannah you will hear from us, we have a fine new convention facility to offer. Dave & Brian- Maybe you guys can speak to this best; how successful has it been (or has it ever been tried) to have a couple of organizations sponsor the event? I don't know if we have enough rail-related exhibits here by ourselves to do it, but if we could pair with 1225 (big drive, no Amtrak) or Huckelberry (1 hour by Amtrak from here and maybe a little longer drive) or even both, it would be a different story. Then again, I'm not sure Marty Knox or MSTRP wants to take on hosting that big of an event (and I am by no means speaking for either of them), although I know Marty has hosted regional meetings in the past. And please remember before you jump on me, I'm new to this game, and I am allowed to dream. And yes, we do have a convention facility in Port Huron, right on the water and next door to our Thomas Edison Depot Museum satellite facility. Its the "live steam" aspect that we are currently lacking....... T.J. Port Huron Museum peremarquette@hotmail.com |

> Dave & Brian- > Maybe you guys can speak to this best; how > successful has it been (or has it ever been > tried) to have a couple of organizations > sponsor the event? In the past a few ARM conventions have had joint sponsors. The second Edmonton meeting had two host groups (but the prime mover in the planning was a member of both). The upcoming Dallas meeting has two host groups. ARM is open to any appropriate member organization or groups of organizations to be hosts / local arrangements for the conventions. Even when there is a primary host, we encourage the convention to involve nearby museums, ARM and not, railroad and not, as presenters of seminars or as destinations of field trips. There are many good resources and stories to be told that are not at the host museums and we would like to see them used. ARM does involve itself with the planning of the meetings that carry its name. Any joint hosting needs to have an agreement between the organizations as to involvement, fronting of deposits, handing of receipts, and payment of bills. ARM has had a policy of providing an advance, if necessary, to help take care of set up costs (it is to be returned at the time of the meeting). Sometimes this offer is taken and sometimes it is not. Many other organizations that run their own annual conventions use the conventions as a major income source. ARM does not see the meetings as a major income source, but does look to it as part of the income stream. ARM takes a set fee per registrant and the does a 50-50 split with the host of any proceeds that the convention makes. Thus the host organization has the possibility of obtaining some income for the time and effort put into the meeting. Too high a registration fee and people will not attend, too low a fee and there is not an appropriate cushion for contingencies and hoped-for surplus. McKinney Avenue Trolley (MATA) is the only active sponsor of the 2002 ARM Convention. Age of Steam is turning out to be officially a passive or non-participatory player, so give the credit to the trolley folks for next year's event! > The next Association of Railway Museum > conventions will be: > 2002 -- Dallas, Texas October 23 - 27 > (hosts: Age of Steam and McKenny Ave.) This > is the weekend after the end of the Texas > State Fair. denmeg_hogan@msn.com |

If a central Michigan location were to host the convention. Like the MSTRP. Then the opportunities for day trips abound in Michigan. in addition to the trips T.J. listed there could be other trips to the Michigan Transit Museum, Coopersville and Marne, Southern Michigan, and Greenfield Village. Maybe it shouldn't be an official ARM or TRAIN convention. But something could be developed that would be very beneficial in many respects > Dave & Brian- > Maybe you guys can speak to this best; how > successful has it been (or has it ever been > tried) to have a couple of organizations > sponsor the event?
