Had a chance to visit Salt Lake City last month and decided to visit the remains of SLG&W 502 sitting out by the Great Salt Lake. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=178376 As you can see, there's not much left. Ten years ago it still had lettering, doors, and window frames. Looks much, much worse now. But it sure would go great with the SLG&W 44-tonner and open car at Rio Vista! (hint! hint!) Info from the SLG&W roster by Stan Jennings: 500-505: McGuire Cummings (1918) closed passenger cars. Rebuilt in 1950. 501 & 502 rebuilt as trailers in 1951. Others scrapped in July 1953. In the mid-1980s the 501 and 502 went to Hoskings Helicopter Service. Later the 501 went to the new Saltair interests and was on display at the new Saltair. The 501 was scrapped October 12, 13, 2006. The 502 still survives and remains in storage near a substation building about two miles east of the new Saltair. - Jeff Terry |

Sad thing... when I first discovered #501 and #502 in about 1983, they were stored together at an industrial park west of the SLC airport, largely intact including original paint/lettering, doors, windows, interior fixtures, etc. Preservation at that point would have been easy. Now #501 has been scrapped and #502 should be! Actually, it looks like it could still be saved, but it'll never be original again. |

Who owns this poor car? Is it somewhere where it could be loaded on a semi and moved if someone was so inclined? Jason Midyette |

Frank That was my reaction too. Guess we both spend too much time thinking about trolley museums. I couldn't tell if they are McGuire or Baldwin trucks, but either would be very useful to some restoration project. |

There's a frontage road about 100' in front of this unit. I-80 is next to that with an on-ramp about a mile south, so loading it out wouldn't be too much of a problem. |

jeff, Sad sight indeed! As you know the WRM has one of the 300 class trailers. It took a long time to sort out the title well enough for it to come to the museum. You will be glad to hear that both the D.2 and the 3?? trailer are in our new car barn. first time indoors for either of them in a lot of years! I don't know if the Diesel will be running any time soon, but the plan is to paint it in the SLG&W colors. Ted Miles |

Supposedly they're McGuires, but they're not like any McGuires I've seen under museum cars. McGuire 10's and 20's (IRM has examples of both) have side frames that look vaguely like St Louis 23A's, but the trucks under 502 are closer to standard Baldwin MCB design. Certainly useful for a carbody restoration project. |

DS-2 needs both engines rebuilt and is missing lots of small parts. It won't be running for many years. The only other "big" McGuire car I can think of this late hour is the CC&W 59 now at Boone, IA. It has trucks that look like your typical McGuire trucks. I guess McGuire could have made some MCB-style trucks. Isn't that what Baldwin trucks are essentially? David |
