Does anyone know where the Harry Potter train in the new motion picture was filmed? I assume it is somewhere in England judging by the landscape and the British equipment. My girlfriend is anxious to know and I'm a bit curious myself. Thanks!

Haven't seen the film, so I can't say for certain. I have seen a short (half-second) clip of the steamer, and it's definitely a red-painted Great Western 4-6-0; I think it might have been 5920(?), which might be "Hagley Hall"......

Railway? There are any number of preservation lines over there that are jewels of time-capsules that look like you stepped into Mr. Peabody's Way-Back Machine. Lines that I know have seen much active movie work include the Severn Valley, the North Yorkshire Moors Ry., the Great Central, the Nene Valley, the Keighley & Worth Valley, the Bluebell, and the Kent & East Sussex. If I had to make a bet, I'd place it on the Severn Valley, based on the GWR loco.

I read last week in the Dallas Morning News that the setting for the Railway scenes was on the North Yorkshore Moors Railway. The engine is one of the Castle Class of the GWR.

The locomotive used as "Hogwarts Castle" is #5972, "Olton Hall". THe locomotives current guise has upset some British railfans, but probably no worse than seeing our tank locos decked out as "Thomas". There were rumors that the engine was going to tour the USA to promote the film, but that has been officially denied by Warner Bros. Besides, where will they find a railroad other than Union Pacific, that will consider running steam?

I think as long as the "Olton Hall" is decked out as "Hogwarts Castle", it will bring the glorious nature of steam before another generation of children and insure that the locomotive is maintained for future films. It's only paint, but it is magic!

I have read the first three Harry Potter books. They are great stories. The "Hogwarts Express" plays a major role on the stories! It serves as transportation for the students and faculty to get to Hogwart's. The locomotive that in the movie was West Country Bulleid Pacific #34027 ('Taw Valley'). In the link below it shows pictures of this locomotive. I leave the floor open to you muggles!

Funny you mention about the Hogwart's Express train touring the U.S. A relative of Ross Rowland visited our Museum this summer and divulged this bit of information to our Educator--perhaps one of Ross's next grandiose plans??? I'll let you decide:)

My information came from the April 26, 2001 issue of "Steam Railway" magazine, a British publication. Saw the film this evening, and she is a 4-6-0 . Looks fine, too!

This non-muggle repeats--he HASN'T seen the movie....

.... But my recollection was that 34027 was NOT used in the MOVIE itself, but rather at a Kings Cross or St. Pancras event about a year or so ago to debut one of the most recent editions of the book. And yes, 34027 was turned out in red paint, with a "Hogwarts Express" headboard.
