Hi

I have a friend that is building a 1-1/2" scale Southern PS-4. Does anyone have a current paint code number or paint formula to match Southern Sylvan Green.

Thanks

Call Jones-Blair Paint in Chattanooga (423-596-4175). Southeastern Railway Museum just ordered some and had them match the paint. They should be able to pull the paint code.

No, but I do want to open a can of worms.

Were there two different greens used by Southern?

It certainly appears to my untrained eye that the color used on steam locomotives is a bit darker than that used on diesels. Also, I have a few station signs - the oldest one (enameled steel) is much darker than the newer ones (painted aluminum).

Also, if you look at photos of 4501 early in its excursion compared to (especially) its 1984-1985 color, it looks lighter.

Is it my imagination?

Hi

The short answer is yes, there are two greens.

The two numbers I have are no longer in the system.

Green Sylvan Dulux 88-5303
Green Sylvan DuPont 93-5800

JAC -

The 4501 once was painted a "Forest Green" because someone thought it was closer to the "Virginia" green that some supposedly Ps-4's were painted. I don't know where this Virginia Green thing came from other than D.P. Morgan's book "Locomotive 4501". TVRM made an effort to duplicate the correct color back in the 90's. We used the color number on the Ps-4 paint scheme drawing and contacted DuPont. DuPont told us that the last time they had batched that color was in 1970 for GM's Cadillac division. However, a 3"x5" Sylvan Green color card was located somewhere and we were able to computer match the color.

If the 4501 is ever allowed out on the mainline again, the present freight black will give way to passenger green.

"Sylvan Green" as it was applied to SR diesels is different than that applied to the steam locomotives as far as I know. Unfortunately, I do not have any specific color codes to document this with. I do have a headlight off an SR steam locomotive and an electric marker from an SR RS-3 and the colors are different.

Hi

The Sylvan Green that was used on the 1971 Cadillac was color code 5273 Sylvan Green metallic.
