On the WNYRHS website Link, a Ron Ziel photo of five locomotives in the PRR historical collection is shown. In the caption for that photo, it is stated that the engines are the "last example of their kind." But isn't there another B-6 0-6-0 in existance? And aren't the two Long Island Rail Road 4-6-0's also G-5's? Nice report on 2-10-0 #4483 on the website, but just trying to determine if this one statement is correct. Thanks. Les |

Yes and no. PRR 1670, the B6sb at the RR Museum of Pa., is a B6sb, which indicates a Belpaire firebox. The #60 in Hockessin, Delaware is a former B6sa, with a conventional radial-stay firebox. Meanwhile, #643 at Williams Grove, Pa. is a class B8a. So: three ex-PRR 0-6-0's, three different classes/designs. Your call. The PRR G5s 5741 at Strasburg is indeed the last PRR 4-6-0, but the two LIRR 4-6-0's are identical designs. It's strictly semantics whether you want to call the LIRR ones the same or different. |

PRR 643 is a class B4a. Although when built by Altoona in 1901 it had a Belpaire firebox boiler, it was re-boilered with a radial-stayed firebox boiler by Porter in 1945. BTW, even as-built, 643 was a very different machine from the remaining B6's at Strasburg and Hockessin. Regards, Jim Robinson |
