This seems to be a day of bad news.
I have just been seeing images of this major fire that is now burning in the Griffith Park area of central Los Angeles.
Does anyone know how endangered the Travel Town railroad collection area is??
The aerial photos that were aired by KRON TV in San Francisco looked very bad.
I am posting this at approx 5:45pm california time tuesday 5-8-07
These are two links from the LA area NBC and CBS TV stations:

While driving home this afternoon, the news radio station mentioned that the Autry Museum, carousel and LA Zoo had been evacuated. LA Live Steamers and Travel Town are in the general area of those attractions but not immediately adjacent. Neither rail spot was specifically mentioned in any of the reports. I would say that they are at significant risk, but not an immediate one.

One of our regular volunteers called me about an hour ago and he was cruising the area, and said the fire was on the other side of the mountain away from Travel Town and LALS. The fire is more on the South side of Griffith Park, and does not appear there is any threat towards Travel Town.

Griffith Park is over 4000 acres.

Travel town is located at the North East corner.

Based on news reports, the fire started on the Western side, and is burning roughly Eastward. The Zoo, golf course, museum and carousel mentioned are south of Travel town.

LA has one of the most experienced wild fire fire departments in the world, with lots of resources...

Additionally, the parking lot provides a barrier between travel town and the nearby brush covered hillside.

The fire has not (yet at least) come anywhere near Travel Town, and it is apparently open for business today.

The LA Time has this map online of the Park and the burn area.

Travel Town is not labeled on this map, but it is basically just to the left of where the 134 Freeway is labeled near the top of the map.

On a somewhat related note, I noticed this morning that the boom for their locomotive crane and the flatcar body which have been stored for years in the dirt lot South of Travel Town's parking lot are gone and have been apparently moved inside. Sounds like progress as long as the fire stays away.
